That's what is called a "non-sequitur," Craig. If the FTC does not see it
within their jurisdiction to regulate all aspects of telecommunications, it
does not follow that therefore all of these other aspects, aside from privacy,
should go unregulated.
In the end the real question is whether Net Neutrality is a
real problem,
It has been a very well-understood problem, for 110 years. The players today
would benefit just as much as the telcos of 110 years ago did, when neutrality
mandates were lacking. Neutrality mandates work against the self-interests of
the companies involved, which is why these companies oppose the mandates. Yes,
it has to be a well-balanced act, like any other regulation. Well-balanced does
not mean "none needed." Well-balanced means that you don't hand the prize on a
silver platter, to just a tiny number of companies.
Given the fact that this statement PREDATES the Open Internet
Order, it should be obvious that the concerns about "picking
winners" are not some new justification
What you seem to miss, Craig, is that you are most definitely "picking
winners," if you abolish neutrality mandates. You are picking the natural
monopoly incumbents, and you are potentially locking out any number of other
competing companies. And yes, natural monopolies are unavoidable, as we have
already discussed many times. For the same reason that most utilities are
natural monopolies.
