Bert,

Very nice explanation, but you barely scratched the surface of dynamic echo, which is still the Achilles' Heal of ATSC, and why ATSC needs M/H to perform decently in a mobile environment. DVB-T on the other hand, deals with dynamic echo in exactly the same way it deals with static echo, therefore as long as the guard interval and FEC is sufficient, it just works.

First of all, I think you correctly imply here that the problem with
SFNs is that they create what looks like echoes to receivers. So SFNs
only work to the extent that these deliberately-created echoes don't
overwhelm the receivers. It's not as simple as the receiver just
accepting the signal from one tower, and ignoring the rest. (Which is
how cell phones work, and in principle so could broadcast receivers, but
that's another discussion.)
