As a PBS member station, I can say that many if not most of us are carrying the PBS HD service as a pass-through, with only branding and EAS being inserted, and also an SD simulcast of our analog service. The elimination of simulcast means we can, if we so choose, devote our entire 19.4 to a single HD service. If it weren't for the simulcast rules we never would have had an HD/SD multicast in the first place. That may be fine for the AVS Forum types, and the Dr. McDonalds of the world who want HD HD HD, but what happens at the end of the transition? We go back to an HD/SD multicast? One thing that is a sure thing, we will NOT go to 100% locally produced High Def in the next 10 years. The best we will be able to muster is upconverted widescreen SD. I really fail to see the logic that eliminating the simulcast rules somehow will speed up the digital transition.
