Yeah, I kind of wondered why he was so worried about this. But then again,
O'Rielly's worry about the security of content requiring proprietary STBs seems
unfounded too. It was pretty clear in the NPRM that VMVPDs had to support
linear "channels," and the only question seemed to be whether or not they also
had to carry the major TV networks.
Or force Netflix to sell its original content to the legacy MVPDs.
That sounds like Republican scare-mongering, but I suppose it would be a
logical extension.
So here we have two jobs that the FCC could easily drop. This, and the STB
issue. In both cases, my reaction is that these commissioners are MVPD addicts
themselves, and they have not yet performed the paradigm shift that so many
people have performed. TV means a proprietary cable, a proprietary box, a
monopolistic service that the content owners MUST equitably provide their
content to, and a bunch of linear channels.
Aka "legacy thinking."
