Depends how you cover those costs, Craig. When you're an info service only, you
can get away with a lot more wiggle. The facts don't change. Paying the
increasing costs of the content cannot be compatible with giving it away for
apparently no money. If pro athletes and actors want more and more, these sweet
deals will be scrutinized a lot more than they used to be. It's not business as
it was then.
Huh? You just told us that VMVPD services are " utterly unessential."
Correct. And Sling TV is not one of them. And not just that, but Sling TV is
not essential either.
There is no MVPD monopoly;
There absolutely was in the early 1980s, when all of this started, locally at
least. Now it's only slightly different.
In markets where the telcos DID overbuild, like yours, they are
able to compete for subscribers.
In competition, two seem almost as happy to agree on the same basic prices.
They might offer slightly different packages of options. Cox and Verizon are
not markedly different.
The vast majority of U.S. homes ALSO consider a MVPD bundle
essential,
No, actually the trend line is too obvious to miss, and you are deliberately
pretending otherwise. More people think having a broadband link is essential,
and a rapidly growing number of households thinks the legacy MVPD model is not.
Legacy MVPD was purely entertainment. Telephone service, and now broadband
service, are something utterly different. And as proof, the reliability
requirements on telecom are very strict. For legacy MVPD service, it's whatever
the company thinks people will put up with.
Educating or indoctrinating?
That's why the FCC has the local caps rules, Craig. Cable channels don't even
apply to any of these rules. Cable channels are not seen as essential, even
their news channels. Or do you want the FCC to include cable channels in the
local caps too?
It is you that are lost. The broadcast networks had NO competition for
decades.
Still a non-sequitur. Broadcast channels always competed against one another,
because they each shared a public distribution resource. The TV spectrum. There
was no monopoly-gateway distribution system, Craig. With the advent of cable,
in the 1970s, the labor-intensive distribution plant resulted in this
market-forces-distorting phenomenon. What your call "superior medium."
The FCC was regulating the MVPDs from the beginning Bert.
Really? So, they had to be neutral? Anyone could put their content on them, in
whatever bundles or no bundles they pleased? Hardly. This would not even have
been technically feasible, at the time. Must-carry, Craig, applies to a handful
of local channels, among dozens or even hundreds of others that are whatever
the local monopoly decides for you. Hardly the same as Title II.
Bert
