In some ways yes, but in others, no.

Blu-ray has a higher disc capacity at 50GB by using a shallower recording depth, but HD DVD managed to get 30GB using the same recording depth as regular DVD and CD, making for an easier to design and less expensive optical pickup. So you tell me....which is more advanced?

In other respects, HD DVD has standard picture-in-picture capability and interactive ethernet connectivity. Blu-ray will add PIP in profile 1.1, but that's mandated only for players released after Oct. 31, which explains the flurry of product announcements this week. Profile 2.0 will add interactive ethernet connectivity (Blu-ray Live), but that is an optional feature for players.
