So, I needed to say "the technology behind -- and embodied in -- cable
distribution of television signals, is, at heart, switching between multiple
signal sources in real time to provide the best quality signal to
subscribers" for you to get the point?

If so, mission accomplished, and I neither said, nor implied that it was a
person. "Cable" in this context is a collective.

One could even carry this one step forward, in the future, when cable STBs
will be able to receive OTA signals. Who'd a thunk it -- OTA bypass!

Cable isn't a person.
