Long-signature analysis on blocks of a thousand symbols or so to determine
channel-impulse response and subsequently to determine equalization is a
solution known for five years or so. It just isn't in the textbooks, so
designers persist in implementing auto-regression techniques.
Techniques to suspend adaptive equalization during drop-outs are known in
mobile digital communications, but have yet to be used in DTV receivers.
