I'm actually in favor of shutting off analog on both cable and OTA, though I don't see the need on cable to have the government mandate it. Digital is just a better way to go, no matter what reservations I may have about 8vsb reception.
As Craig says, it's all bits (regulated by economics and politics). - Tom Manfredi, Albert E wrote:

Mandate (without particular support from either side) that analog OTA must be turned OFF and simultaneously mandate analog cable must be kept ON.I always thought, still do, that the FCC is within its mandate to shut off analog TV, since the FCC is responsible for managing use of the RF spectrum. And that cable companies are perfectly capable of making decisions on how best to serve their existing analog customers, either by continuing to simulcast analog for a time, or providing digital cable STBs with NTSC outputs, or not actively opposing the direct sale of digital cable STBs with CableCard. Analog OTA users who don't want to upgrade their equipment would of course come out ahead by buying one of those ATSC D/A boxes, for about $10 or $20 out of pocket. Or they can pay at least that much per month to subscribe to a cable basic-basic tier.
