Who owns the largest news portals on the Internet?

Yes, anyone can use the internet to make "news" available to anyone, 
but the reality is that most of the large NEWS portals are operated 
by the same media conglomerates that control radio, TV and other mass 
media outlets today. The major difference is that it is easier to use 
the Internet to find alternative points of view and to check facts...

It is really helpful to be able to find and read the original 
releases, or full coverage of some news event, as opposed to watching 
the homogenized version interpreted by the mass media.

What the author was trying to convey is that a large percentage of 
viewers in the U.S. have lost interest in and/or faith in the mass 
media. Sometimes I wonder if the Republicans are trying to accelerate 
the demise of these dinosaurs by encouraging them to mate with one
