It "should" be a trivial matter to produce a high quality 1080i output form 720P. The 720P is scaled to 1920 x 540 - the scaling filters need to observe field dominance with the proper one line offset between fields. Additional filtering 'can" be used to improve horizontal detail, however it probably is not necessary, as hardly any 1080i sets (at least those that are CRT based) can resolve more than 800-900 samples per line.
