For backhaul, you can use high gain transmit and receive antennas, optimally
located. What applies to last mile connectivity for 5G to homes, or worse to
mobile devices, should not be assumed to apply to everything.

Perhaps you can explain why the kind of microwave links you describe are
falling out of favor?
Microwaves are good for cooking. They are still fairly useful for fixed
point-to-point networks. But fiber is FAR more reliable, and now is commonly
available for network interconnects.
