That's a tough one. A bit like OTA broadcasters, movie theaters are no longer
THE distribution medium that one must rely on. For us, though, it's a fun time,
preceded by dinner out, for weekends. Sorry, but going right back home and
watching a movie on TV just isn't the same thing.

Funny thing is, though, we have noticed, or at least we have speculated, that a
transition of sorts going on.

We typically go to a Regal multiplex near home, fairly new still (stadium style
seating in all theaters), in which the theaters are rarely packed to capacity.
Only perhaps for some movies, on the first weekend, and only for certain show
times. Usually they are largely empty.

Regal recently opened a new multiplex, not far from our habitual one, with
much, much smaller theaters, only one bathroom (the older one had four), but
wow are these theaters fancy. They have electrically-powered reclining
seats-cum-footrest, a swivel-away table for every seat, of course stadium style
seating. Very fancy, although each theater only accommodates a few dozen
people! Which means, you have to reserve your seat ahead of time, or risk not
finding a seat at all.

Is this the future? I ask because we have noticed that the older, larger
multiplex that we preferred is not getting the good movies lately. Regal is
obviously trying to lure people into its new, small multiplex. We were
wondering last weekend if perhaps this was because they had lower overhead
costs in the new multiplex, and are trying to wean people off the old one? And
then maybe tear the old multiplex it down?

Bert
