This article says that CBS will only be able to stream (to you) the
NFL game you would be able to watch from your local CBS affiliate. It's
a missing piece of the CBS All Access puzzle, but not the breakthrough
that allowing Internet access to ALL of the games CBS is carrying
around the country would be...
Some things are caused by technical limitations, other things are caused by
artificial limitations placed on top of the technology.
With one-way broadcast mode, be that over cable or OTA, spectrum limitations
determine how many games can be transmitted simultaneously in a market, for
live viewing. With unicast IP streams, the capacity of the links to individual
households is no longer the limiting factor. The technology should have no
trouble allowing households to choose among multiple games.
Still, this is just another barrier that has been knocked down. The complaint,
just a few very short months ago, was that CBS All Access did not carry NFL
games? Ooops, that complaint vanished. Now we are looking for features not
offered previously at all. Okay, that will come too.
