Bert, If it were up to me, PBS would have fought for the Sinclair Petition in 1999. But it wasn't up to me, it was up to Edmund Williams, then Senior PBS Engineer. He was part of the original Charlotte testing of 8-VSB, and he was so married to 8-VSB that after he personally witnessed the Sinclair Baltimore demos in 1999, he was forced to admit that COFDM ran rings around 8-VSB, but thought, like everyone else, that it was a simple fix for 8-VSB and improvements 'were just around the corner.' Believe me, he and I had many more heated email exchanges than you and I have had on the subject of ATSC vs. DVB-T. He even lurked/participated on this reflector in the 1999/2000 time frame, until he couldn't stand the 8-VSB bashing anymore. Ed pulled a lot of weight in the engineering community, and he fought very hard both inside and outside of PBS for 8-VSB. He is one of the main people that persuaded so many in our industry to 'stay the course.' He is now retired.
