It wasn't people's computers.

We have a vacation property located in Claire, Michigan, which is about 100
miles north of the transmitter site for a couple of the UHF broadcasters
serving the Lansing, MI market, operating on UHF 47 and 53..

Most summer mornings until about 8am or so I can usually get crystal clear
NTSC from those stations, as well as from the NTSC of my own station's
transmitter located a bit closer at 75 miles. As the sun rises the signals
fade until they disappear for the day. Atmospheric ducting is a wonderful
thing, but unfortunately it cannot be counted on as a business model. This
trick usually only works in the summer months.
