Most (not all) HDTVs have TWO speakers...which means most of them "ask" for Stereo when they negotiate an HDMI interface. In this configuration, the Optical/Coax output to an AV Receiver is the ONLY way to get DD5.1 surround sound....presuming the STB can be so configured.... [This is a popular configuration, since a user can just watch TV without powering up the AV Receiver.] If HDMI is routed to HDTV via AV Receiver, then the the AV Receiver can "ask" for DD5.1 output....begging the question of what is (or should be) output to the attached HDTV........ Lot's of people report problems.....the connected HDTV sometimes forces everything to Stereo.... This configuration also forces the owner to ALWAYS have the AV Receiver powered up simply to watch TV.... [Who invented this fiasco of a (proprietary) interface?????] Fol. may also be of interest: http://www.digitaltvdesignline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=198900437 holl_ands ==================================== John McClenny <jamcclenny@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: Do all HD TVs support 5.1 AC-3 over HDMI? Do they downconvert to stereo? I am trying to understand a request to have an IPTV STB downconvert AC3 to stereo before it is sent over the HDMI audio. The only scenario where this request makes sense is if not all HD TVs can handle 5.1 over HDMI. My level of ignorance here is pretty large :). thanks!
