UPDATE 1-ABC emphasizes dramas for upcoming fall season - May 18, 2004 10:53 AM (Reuters) (Adds ABC executive comment, mid-season shows, bylines) By Michele Gershberg and Steve Gorman NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES, May 18 (Reuters) - The ABC television network's new management team, desperate for some hits, is going for fewer laughs next season while putting more emphasis on the quest for its first successful drama in three years. ABC, trailing its three major network rivals in viewer ratings and dragging down the share price of corporate parent The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS), unveiled a fall prime-time lineup on Tuesday that includes just two new sitcoms, four fresh dramas and two reality shows. On the drama front, ABC will launch four new shows in the fall, including David E. Kelly's "The Practice: Fleet Street," the successor series to his long-running legal hit, with James Spader taking his role on the old show onto the spinoff. The other dramas include "Desperate Housewives," from the producers of "Melrose Place" teen drama "Life As We Know It" and "Lost," an action adventure series. The network will add Steven Bochco's "Blind Justice" later in the season after the conclusion of "NYPD Blue."
