Europe is not starting with a clean slate, any more
than ATSC can, if it so chooses. The HD streams alone
are so far non-existent in Europe (but do exist in
Australia). So Europe is very much constrained to
separate streams, if DVB-T wants to continue to
support legacy apps.

Alan made a good point, though, that people are
willing to buy new gear if they see an advantage
to doing so. If people here see an advantage to
1080 at 60p HDTV, then they will buy receivers
that support the updated A/53 specs, with AVC or
WM9. Every bit as much here as anywhere else.

I also have never met anyone, or certainly any
organization, whose vision of the future is
anything but flawed.

In short, I see no difference in how we move ahead
with ATSC or with DVB-T. I've been reading on this
list how ATSC cannot do this and cannot do that,
but all of those objections have turned out to be
in error. ATSC was never a point solution, it does
support upgradeability, just as any other digital
standard does. All upgrades are painful, even in
the Internet world.
