Face time and other video chat apps are symmetrical. Uploading pictures and data to the cloud in general, or to apps like Facebook, needs a wider upload speed. Apps like Periscope And Facebook Live that stream live video need a wider upload channel.

The days of asymmetrical data use are declining.

Most broadband sessions are asymmetrical. About the only telco service I can think of that is symmetrical is a traditional cellular phone call (not a VOIP session).
