I didn't mean necessarily HD.

Example: last night, CBS9 was transmitting an old episode of CSI Miami.
The episode was originally HD and 16:9, and now it was being transmitted
as SD and 4:3. I've seen this sort of scenario repeated countless times.

Why couldn't the syndicated show have been transmitted as SD and 16:9?

The only explanation I can come up with is that the station wants to
create a single program stream to the ATSC and the NTSC transmitters,
and that they don't want to letterbox the NTSC program?? That's a guess.

When OTA NTSC goes away, are we likely to start seeing more SD
transmitted as 16:9, in such cases as this?
