The point is that many industries designated as natural monopolies are not. You
can make the case for sewer and water systems, and electricity to an extent,
but the main reason we see communications industries colluding with the
politicians is that they can make more money operating as regulated monopolies
and oligopolies, and regulators haul in huge revenues too.

There are no physical constraints to overbuild wired broadband
If that were true, then FiOS and Google Fiber would not have called it quits.
And around and around we go.
It is true Bert. Anyone can negotiate franchise agreements and pay to attach or
bury their wires in a community. The problem is not physical constraints, but
ECONOMIC constraints.
You live in a community with wired competition. You have cable and FIOS TV and
broadband, and two choices for DBS TV service. Granted, a third or fourth
overbuild makes little sense, but that is because of economics.
You continue to ignore the economic impact of regulation on competition. It
adds to the risk of investing in overbuilds. This is a major reason Google will
not build in your neighborhood, and the telcos are not building FTTH systems.
The telcos also face high labor costs.
Perhaps the economics of wireless broadband may become attractive, but only for
those willing to make huge investments in spectrum.
Once again you keep falling into the same old trap: you keep tying
the infrastructure and the service provided together.
Pay attention, Craig. If any aspect of the service cannot be competitive,
then we have a problem. Any component. You have a habit of ignoring
constraints, and not just in this argument. If you don't appreciate the
constraints, what you say becomes unconvincing.
Pay attention Bert. Regulation is a major factor in making the economic aspect
of providing a service unattractive for new entrants. That is why formerly
competitive industries seek government protection from competition.

Craig
