Mark, I was not talking about your apartment. Before we came to your
apartment we had tested first at the AT&T building on the 25th floor
where we had our COFDM transmitter located on a large terrace there.
In the office with a large window facing the Empire State building
only a block below Canal Street we had a table with the LG prototype
receiver and a RS double bow tie antenna facing the ESB. There was
NOTHING between us and that building.

By walking in front of the antenna or standing to either side of it,
in a particular spot, we could cause loss of signal. We had better
luck in your apartment and that was a relief since, as you know, I
wanted it to work.

Even with the reception problems I was very happy with that receiver
and was tempted to ignore request from LG to return it. As you know we
brought two more 5th gen LG Inotech receivers to your apartment later
with less promising results. Both of which I still have. The main
difference in these and the prototype was that the 5th gen chip was in
the Inotech tuner can while with the protoype it was on the
motherboard of the receiver.

I disagree -- at least as regards the tests of the LG 5th-generation box
in my apartment. Here's the relevant section of my memo of July 22 in 2004:

"When I say 'reliably,' I mean not only that the pictures and sound were
okay but that people could move around the room and I could move the
antenna around without causing any breakup. It WAS possible for me to
find an orientation where I could make it fail, but I really had to try,
even on WNYW-DT, which could previously be received only with the
antenna on the floor."

But I agree with Bob that what we tested does not yet appear to be
available in any set-top box being sold. No receiver tested here before
or since has worked as well -- and that includes Samsung's latest.

TTFN,
Mark
