     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):
<http://www.americares.org/>
<http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html>
<http://www.directrelief.org/index.html>
<http://www.hopeww.org/>
<http://www.mercycorps.org/splash/>
     I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - Ipsos Insight survey - I mischaracterized the 15% figure by saying only
that many "want" HDTV. The survey actually said only that many were somewhat
or very likely to "get" HDTV. As a reader pointed out, maybe they want it but
feel they can't afford it.

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -
          - In the spirit of the early "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Updates,
the retreat is still sold out. There's a waiting list, and you can continue to
try out creative excuses on HPA executive director Eileen Kramer via e-mail at
<ekramer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>. The demo rooms are also completely filled, and we've
also reach the limit on Thursday's breakfast roundtables. The only room left
is for a Friday roundtable or two (if you're already registered) and for the
two half-day seminars on Tuesday, which still have room. So, if you'd like to
learn about digital newsgathering at the joint ATSC/SBE seminar (with a 2-GHz
update beforehand) or about display technology from guru Charles Poynton, c'mon
over! Otherwise, feel free to try your luck with Eileen.
          - In the main program, Josh Pines, vp of imaging research and
development at Technicolor Digital Cinema, is joining the Academy's
color-information exchange session. Neil Feldman, senior-vp of In-Three, is
joining the 3-D session. And Julien Seligmann, chief operating officer of
SmartJog will be describing ISA, interoperability & security architecture for
digital cinema and fielding questions about digital cinema in France at the
international digital-cinema session.
          - Bob Zahn, head of Broadcast Video Rentals and representing PERA
(the Production Equipment Rental Association), will be moderating a roundtable
called "SMPTE RP210: Thwarting Theft through Metadata," the idea being that a
unique code for each piece of equipment can be used not only to track
characteristics and flaws but also to trace stolen equipment.
          - Recent additions to the demo rooms include AJA Video Systems,
Cinea, Cobalt Digital, Fujinon, MESoft, MOS Sync, and Virtual Katy. And,
although I don't know that we had anything to do with it, EE Times had a story
about demonstrator Genoa Color Technologies this week:
<http://www.eet.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=177104261>
          - So, if you can make it to the half-day seminars on February 21, BE
THERE! If you're registered for the retreat, be there, too. If not, try your
luck with Eileen and/or call your local suicide hotline:

     - Broadcast flag hearings - Here are a few stories:

     This next one, from Educated Guesswork, talks about how the flag is not
secure:

     And these describe the pros and cons of the extension of the concept into
an "audio flag":

          - Netflix plans to offer both as soon as they're available:

          - Here's a story on the deal with the Advanced Access Content System
(AACS) requiring downconverted analog outputs:
<http://www.dvdexclusive.com/article.asp?articleID=2657>
     Warren Communications News reported Thursday that there are plenty of
"loopholes" in the agreement, however, including a "sunrise" exemption for the
first batches to be shipped. The story is no longer on their site:

     - TV for mobile devices -
          - The Association for Maximum Service Television is warning of
interference from Qualcomm's MediaFLO -- 122,000 in one market alone:
<http://www.mstv.org/docs/dortch1.12.06.pdf>
          - Aside from DMB, DVB-H, and MediaFLO, there's another system called
TDtv. It's said to offer "up to 50 channels of TV for standard mobile phone
screens, or 15 higher quality QVGA channels, all in their existing 5MHz of
unpaired 3G spectrum." Given that QVGA is 320 x 240, the quality of the
"standard" service should be interesting:
