[opendtv] 20051206 Twang's Tuesday Tribune (Mark's Monday Memo)

  • From: Mark Schubin <tvmark@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):
<http://www.americares.org/>
<http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html>
<http://www.directrelief.org/index.html>
<http://www.hopeww.org/>
<http://www.mercycorps.org/splash/>
     I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - Ancillary and supplementary DTT services - I shouldn't have restricted
the non-fee services to TV in the last memo. Free broadcast audio and data
services are also okay.

     - Northern Ireland and free DTT receivers - It also appears that my
sarcasm didn't make it through the last memo well enough. Yes, I am well aware
that there are no DTT-receiver giveaways (at least not yet) in Northern
Ireland. KIRO-TV's consumer reporter is the one who didn't know it.

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -
          - Do you know anything about the CineGrid approach to networked
scalable media? How about the digital-cinema initiative of Germany's
Fraunhofer Institute? Interoperability between different levels of European
digital cinema? Come hear Laurin Herr of Pacific Interface, Siegfried Foessel
of the Fraunhofer Institute, and Peter Wilson of HDDC, along with others
describing other projects, fill you in at the international developments in
digital cinema session.
          - Does anyone REALLY expect people to watch TV on a pocket phone?
Hear about the DMD, DVB-H, and MediaFLO distribution techniques, from the
people installing one of the systems, at the TV for Mobile Devices session.
     FYI, here's a story from CommsDesign, concentrating on Sweden, but
discussing developments in mobile TV:
<http://tinyurl.com/83d3q>
          - What do Chuck Crawford, award-winning co-founder of Television
Production Services, Mark Johnson, vp of technology at Technicolor, and Jim
Taylor, senior vp and general manager of the advanced technology group at Sonic
Solutions have in common? For one thing, they are the co-authors of the highly
acclaimed book "DVD Demystified." For another, they will be doing a joint
session at ***The Technology Retreat*** on next generation consumer disks
(including Blu-ray and HD DVD). Are you familiar with Dolby Digital Plus,
DTS-HD, 6.1- and 7.1-channel surround sound, and the new lossless audio codecs
being pushed by studios? They are. How about choosing video codecs, doing
interactive design, and dealing with content protection? Again, they literally
wrote the book. If you're involved in consumer media (or equipment), this is a
session you shouldn't miss. It's worth the price of admission alone.
          - As a bonus, Crawford and Johnson will co-moderate a
Thursday-morning breakfast roundtable on "Next-Generation DVD Formats: Impact
on Production," and Taylor will moderate a Friday-morning breakfast roundtable
on "Next-Generation DVD Formats: Technologies and State of Affairs."
          - Peter Wilson, founder of the UK's High Definition & Digital Cinema,
Ltd., will also be moderating two roundtables. Thursday's is on independent
digital production for digital cinema, and Friday's asks whether the term
"standardized workflow" is a red herring.
          - Thomas Bremond, senior vp of SmartJog, will be moderating a
roundtable on new global digital delivery models for the entertainment
industry. So far, there are 22 confirmed breakfast roundtables, but there's
(almost) always room for more. If you'd like to moderate one -- on ANY topic
-- please contact me.
          - There's more to come -- LOTS more. Register NOW!

     - U.S. analog cutoff - Representative Ed Markey told C-SPAN he thinks the
date will be delayed (I do, too). The full story from Broadcasting & Cable

     - Digital-cable-ready equipment -
          - Negotiations between the cable and consumer-electronics industries
on two-way compatibility still have a number of "sticking points":
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA6288257.html>
          - About 80,000 CableCARDs have been deployed since the first
digital-cable-ready TVs began to appear. This Multichannel News story does NOT

          - Meanwhile, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association
(NCTA) has told the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that downloadable
conditional-access security (DCAS), requiring neither CableCARDs nor expensive
connectors for them, could replace the current system as soon as July 1, 2008:

          - The latest story is NBC Universal providing extensive content
through the iTunes store:

     You can ask an NBC Universal vp -- or similarly high-ranking excutives
from ABC, CBS, and Fox -- all about it at ***The Technology Retreat***. And,
in honor of the big VOD shock to the industry, here's a hint regarding the
grand-prize quiz question of 2006. It'll be about VOD. Study up. But you
can't win if you aren't there to enter:

          - Now there's a product designed specifically to record TV (using
AVC) for display on Sony's PlayStation Portable. The company, Neuros
Technology International, seems very open about content accessibility:
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA6288929.html>
          - I liked the first part of this headline: "Disney Delivers
Full-Screen Theatrical-Quality Video Direct to Video-Enabled iPods and PCs With
'Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.'" There must be a
new definition of "full-screen theatrical quality" if it includes a 2.5-inch
320 x 240 4:3 LCD. In fairness, the story makes it clear the quality refers to
the PCs, not the iPods:

     - Advanced consumer discs -
          - The BIG story this week, of course, is the session on them at

of 500 HDTV owners and found:
          - about half had no way to get any HDTV programming,
          - 28% thought the pictures improved enough just by getting the HDTV,
          - 23% thought they were getting HD already because the message before
HD shows said they were in HD, and
          - 18% thought they didn't need anything besides the HDTV to get HDTV:

     - July 1 -
          - This week I've listed 143 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
117 (82%) have integrated DTT-reception capability, including those about which
there is some doubt. As of July 1, 100% of those manufactured in or imported
to the U.S. and equipped with tuners were supposed to have integrated
DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 74 ads for TVs between 25- and
35-inch. Of those, 17 (23%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of
July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. and equipped with
tuners were supposed to have integrated DTT-reception capability.

       - Devices possibly not covered but receiving analog TV signals:
          - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 - None of the lists I check have been updated since the last memo.

- There are no H/DTV items on the agenda of Friday's FCC meeting:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-262545A1.pdf>

- There has been an interesting thread on the availability of PSIP program
information on the OpenDTV Forum. One part is that some DTT receivers are
apparently utilizing electronic program guides being transmitted in the
vertical blanking intervals of ANALOG TV stations. Presumably, when those
stations go off the air, those digital sets will lose their program guides.
Here is the URL for the first message of the thread:

- Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal, and now Dreamworks are supporting the
Access Integrated Technologies/Christie plan to provide digital-cinema
equipment to movie theaters without the exhibitors having to make any capital
investment (they DO have to pay a "project management fee" and for a ten-year
maintenance contract:

     Is that a significant breakthrough? I'm not close enough to the business
end of digital cinema to say, but I DO know where to find out. The big movers
and shakers of the field will be at ***The Technology Retreat***. How about
you?

     In a somewhat related story, the latest edition of Kagan Research's "The

- According to DisplaySearch's Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report:
     - worldwide TV shipments in the third quarter were up 2% over the 3rd
quarter of 2004 to 43.6 million units,
     - 16% of those units were flat panel (about 12.5% LCD & 3.5% plasma), but
flat-panel TV represented 55% of overall revenues,
     - 32-inch was the most-popular LCD size in every global region, followed
by 20-inch and 26-inch,
     - HDTV was 47% of plasma worldwide and 66% in North America,
     - 42-inch was the most-popular EDTV-plasma size, with a 50% share,
     - smaller-than-42-inch EDTV plasma dropped from 11% to 8%,
     - microdisplay (MD) rear-projection TVs (RPTVs) had huge growth but
represented only about 634,000 units, although that was more than the 479,000
CRT-based RPTVs (a drop of 10%), the first time MD beat CRT in RPTV,
     - of those MD RPTVs, DLP edged out LCD 47% to 46% [but, if the rest are
LCoS/D-ILA/SXRD, shouldn't those be counted among LCD?],
     - direct-view CRTs declined 8% to 35.5 million, but that still represented
more than 81% of the market,
     - direct-view CRT prices were down 17% from last year, and size dropped to
an average of 22.5-inch,
     - Funai is the number-one supplier of CRTs in North America (the Emerson,
Sylvania, and Symphonic brands, and some Aventura, Durabrand, Esa, Misakai, and
even Magnavox), and
     - Samsung is number-one overall worldwide in both revenue and units.
     There's lots more in this story and much, much more in the report:

     Need I point out that the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) 2005
figures for TV sales to U.S. dealers will be reviewed at ***The Technology
Retreat***?
<http://www.hpaonline.com>

- Pacific Media Associates reports a big increase in the street prices of
rear-projection TVs due to the shift from being CRT based to being microdisplay
based. The story is not yet on their web site:
<http://www.pacificmediaassociates.com/Press_releases/press_release.htm>

- I'm not yet permitted to release CEA sales figures past week 45, but some of
the older figures have been revised. According to the revised figures, sales
to U.S. dealers of non-"digital" television through the 45th week of this year
were down 11.9% from the same period last year. My 12-week running average is
down 12.6%. So-called "digital" TVs represented 17.1% of non-flat-panel TV
sales to dealers. If flat-panel is included, based on the most-recent figures
I have, they would rise to 32.5%. CEA considers a TV "digital" if it can
display at least 480p imagery OR can receive DTT signals (or both).
     There are no big surprises in the figures for the 46th and 47th weeks,
although the comparative drop in growth of non-flat-panel "digital" TVs has
slowed.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at Best
Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Good Guys, and Video & Audio Center.

- Ad confusions: Flat Universe called the Panasonic non-HD TH42PD50 "HDTV
Comp."

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo. J&R had
Sony's HDR-HC1 HD camcorder for under $1600. You can learn how HD it is at the
small-format HD acquisition seminar at ***The Technology Retreat***. BE THERE!

- DVD news:

     - I am not yet permitted to release CEA sales figures past week 45. The
old DVD sales figures, unlike those of TV, have not been recently revised.

     - The big DVD news of the week, of course, is the presence of all three
authors of "DVD Demystified" at ***The Technology Retreat***, offering
everything you wanted to know about the next generation consumer disk formats
-- and then some.
     As usual, the high-end talent at the retreat is so extensive -- from
National Security Agency video-intelligence analysts to Hollywood-studio
digital-cinema decision makers -- that whatever you want to know, SOMEONE will
be there who knows the answer. Come and ask!
