'Tis the season for getting tax deductions for charitable contributions.
Please be as generous as you can. It has been a very rough year for a lot of
people.
Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -
          - Not much has happened over the Thanksgiving break. There's another
breakfast roundtable, this one on collaborative workflow in broadcast and
remote broadcast operations, moderated by Chris Genereaux and Jon Pannaman of
Quantel. There's plenty of room for more roundtables, so let me know if you'd
like to moderate one.
          - I hope to have some bigger announcements on the main program soon.
The digital-cinema session is being coordinated by Charles Swartz of the
Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California. His
introduction will be followed by presentations on color management from the
camera to the digital source master (DSM). That will be followed by some
real-world examples of turning the DSM into the DCP (digital-cinema package),
and that will be followed by international developments.
          - Charles Poynton's seminar will include information on the
International Electrotechnical Commission's recent xvYCC standard for extended
color in broadcasting.
          - There will be MUCH more. It's just hard to choose what gets to be
in the main program. We've got about five times more submissions than we can
use.
          - Don't forget: Starting with the 2005 event we have had to limit
attendance (it was either that or move the event to the Great Hall of the
People in Beijing). Don't be left out in the cold. Register NOW!

     - Advanced consumer disks -
          - CNet has noted that the first Blu-ray movie will use MPEG-2 rather
than AVC or VC-1:
<http://tinyurl.com/bpxgy>
          - I should be able to announce an outstanding session at ***The
Technology Retreat*** on Blu-ray, HD DVD, and everything you'll need to know
about them very soon. It'll be from the people who literally wrote the book.
BE THERE!

     - Small-screen TV and alternatives to broadcast distribution - The subject
actually rated a New York Times editorial. Here are a couple of sentences:
"But this is what they came up with? Reruns of second-rate sitcoms from
the 70's and a chance to buy the same shows you can already watch on TV?"

     - Multicasting - Here's Television Broadcast's cover story:
<http://televisionbroadcast.com/articles/article_1122.shtml>

     - July 1 -
          - This week I've listed 190 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
139 (73%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 100% of
those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. and equipped with tuners were
supposed to have integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 97 ads
for TVs between 25- and 35-inch. Of those, 12 (12%) have integrated
DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or
imported to the U.S. and equipped with tuners were supposed to have integrated
DTT-reception capability.

- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reminding DTT broadcasters
that, if they're using their channel for anything other than free-to-view TV
programming, they need to file with the commission by December 1:

whereas digital cable grew 64% and DTT 21%:

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets
for the first 44 weeks of 2005 were down 11.6% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was also down 11.6%. For the first 45 weeks it was
11.8% and, for the ten-week running average, 12.2%.
Sales of so-called non-flat-panel "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers
for the 44th week were 66,820 units, for the 45th week 94,210 units and for the
first 45 weeks 3,585,723 (compared to 17,401,208 for non-flat-panel sets not
called "digital" by CEA). For 18 of the last 21 weeks, the number of
non-flat-panel "digital televisions" sold to U.S. dealers was lower than in the
same period last year.
"Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 17.2% of the non-flat-panel TVs
sold to U.S. dealers through the 44th week this year and 17.1% through the 45th
week. Based on CEA's report of unit sales through the end of June including
flat-panel displays, the total "digital" percentage (assuming no flat-panel
non-"digital" TVs) would be 32.5%. It may be worth noting here what that
means. About 67% of the TVs sold through the 45th week this year were still
plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes, and that percentage is
increasing slightly.
To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers. CEA says
that, through June, about 85% of "digital televisions" were HDTV.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of the "free" DirecTV units at Best
Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA's "Good Guys Inside" as well as a Samsung unit
at J&R. Not only do the "free" DirecTV units require a subscription to the
satellite service, but those attempting to use them for broadcast DTT only have
had trouble with the setup. One version of the new H20 is made by LG and
reportedly uses the fifth-generation demodulator.

- Ad confusions: Circuit City listed the 4:3 1024 x 768 Polaroid FLM1507 as
"HD-Ready;" in 16:9 mode, it would have 576 active lines, the same as a
standard-definition European TV. CompUSA labeled HP's integrated LC3200N as
"HD ready" but the equally integrated PL4200N as "HD built-in." CompUSA "Good
Guys Inside" noted that the Zenith Z42PX2D had "HD Built-In" but was "EDTV."

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

- DVD news:

     - According to CEA's revised figures, sales of DVD players to U.S. dealers
for the first 44 weeks of 2005 were down 21.8% from the same period in 2004;
for the first 45 weeks it was 21.7%. My ten-week running average was down
17.2% at the end of the 45th week. VCR sales were down 39.9% for the first 44
weeks and 40.4% for the first 45.

     - Some of the most interesting prices of "Black Friday" had to do with
DVD. Best Buy offered fairly recent major DVD movies for $3.99 each (their
lowest-cost CDs in the same ad supplement were $7.99) and the LiteOn
LVW-1101HC1 DVD recorder for $69.99 after mail-in rebate. CompUSA offered 20
DVD+RW blank disks for $4.98.

     - TiVo's latest announcement is pretty strange. In addition to searching
out TV programming, the boxes will now search out targeted advertising:

- Speaking today at the Senate Commerce Committee hearing on indecency, FCC
head Kevin Martin said the commission was wrong in finding previously that "a
la carte" cable (where consumers pay only for channels they want) would cost
the public more than the current system of tiers:
