Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - ***The Technology Retreat*** -
          - A slip of the finger had me renaming Kathleen Milnes of the
Entertainment Economy Institute. Again, she's doing a roundtable on the
workforce in post-production.
          - Among other recently added roundtables are one on non-linear color
correction moderated by Simon Cuff of Digital Vision, one on data- and
video-centric HD & 2K DI moderated by Pat Howley of Digital Vision, another by
Pat on automated restoration workflow, one on motion-compensated dust & grain
reduction moderated by Goran Appelquist of Digital Vision, and two on HDV in
mainstream production moderated by Michael Silbergleid of Television Broadcast
magazine.
          - There's room for plenty more roundtables, but the main program is
filling up fast. I expect it to be finalized by the end of this month, so, if
you have proposed presentations, get them to me ASAP.
          - For those of you living north of Madison in Chicago, all is not
lost. This year's world-championship series that really counts, the one shot
by Fox Sports in HD slo-mo, the fabulous TechnoTreat Softball Challenge, will
be played -- curse of the billy-goat notwithstanding -- at Wrigley Field!
          - BE THERE! February 22-24 (with pre-retreat ATSC and Charles
Poynton seminars on the 21st and displays supersession on the 22nd), Marriott
Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs area), California:

     - U.S. analog hard cut-off date -

          - Senator McCain, having failed in the Commerce Committee, is now
trying to get the full Senate to vote for an amendment to move the date up by a
year to April 7, 2008. Senator Stevens says that "will destroy the process,"
and he's probably right. So, if McCain's amendment passes, it might mean no
hard date at all rather than an earlier one. We might know by the end of the
week:

Here's yet another call for keeping analog TV to provide emergency

     - Tiny screens - "The Extra-Large, Ultra-Small Medium" was the headline of
a story by Jodi Kantor on the front page of the "Arts & Leisure" section of The
New York Times (which is the first thing Times subscribers saw on Saturday
morning). The caption of a picture was "Are the 60-inch plasma screen and the
tiny Apple iPod still part of the same viewing experience?" I think it's well
worth a read. It should be free until Sunday:
<http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/30/arts/television/30kant.html>
By the way, from when Apple began offering video from its iTunes Music
Store on October 12 through the end of the month, they sold more than a million
video downloads:

Also by the way, CBS is streaming three episodes of "Threshold," starting
today:

     - DirecTV HD local-into-local -
          - Here's a story from TV Week:
<http://www.tvweek.com/article.cms?articleId=28909>
          - Perhaps I should have mentioned on Saturday that this means there
are now people in the U.S. watching AVC (H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10) video though
home boxes:

     - KCSM - In an ironic twist, the station that lost 38% of its audience
when it dropped analog has reportedly had to restore some analog transmission
to protect its digital license because the digital transmitter is not in the
city of license:

     - July 1 -
          - This week I've listed 133 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,

     - May 1 - None of the lists I check were updated since Saturday.

- International H/DTV news: A survey conducted for retailer You Me TV found
that even in the UK only 37% were aware of an impending analog switch off. In
Scotland, it was only 29%:

- I'm not permitted to release the Consumer Electronics Association's figures
for the 41st week of 2005 until Monday. There are no big surprises.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of the DirecTV units at Best Buy
and Magnolia, and -- surprise! -- there was a Sony at J&R.

- Ad confusions: Best Buy referred to the Philips 37PF7320A/37 integrated DTV
as a "monitor." Similarly, Circuit City called the Sharp LC37D4U merely
"HD-Ready," though it has integrated ATSC reception.
Fry's referred to the NEC LCD2335WXM as having an "integrated TV tuner,"
but it's only analog. Fry's also advertised a 480p Toshiba plasma TV but said
it had "HD Dynamic Contrast."

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
I found it interesting that Best Buy chose to label the 13-inch Insignia
ISTV040917 as a "Round Tube" TV. I guess flat tubes are becoming so common
that we're on the verge of swapping adjectives.
There were some Sharp LCDs listed in the Magnolia ad, but the information
was garbled on its way to me, so I've left them out.

- The latest thing in cable is "quadruple-play": video, high-speed Internet,
voice, and now, through a deal between Advance-Newhouse, Comcast, Cox, and Time
Warner on the cable side and Sprint Nextel on the other, wireless. What makes

mobile phones and watching cable programming on them is supposed to follow.
