The other possibility is simply a higher dynamic range before the first
narrow band filter. With a really good dynamic range RF amp and big
enough mixer drive, a single conversion tuner should work OK. This
assumes that if it uses some sort of electronic tuning on the pre-preamp
tuned circuit that that circuit itself is linear.
