U.S. taxpayers have until the end of the month to claim 2004 tax deductions
for contributions to tsunami relief:
<http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/politics/politics-quake-usa.html?oref=login>
     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

- Follow-ups:

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, January 26-28 (with a number of
earlier pre-retreat events), at the Marriott Rancho Las Palmas Resort,
Rancho Mirage, California -
          - The main retreat is still sold out (kindly discard those plots
of kidnapping or worse), BUT it is still possible to register to attend one
of the half-day pre-retreat seminars tomorrow (Tuesday):
               - The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) "Getting
PSIP Right":
<http://www.atsc.org/psip.html>
               - Charles Poynton's "HDTV and Digital Cinema Camera
Technology":
<http://www.poynton.com/notes/events/20050125_PSP_HPA.html>
     Both will be outstanding (and timely), and both start at 2 pm, so
there's time even for east-coasters (now that flights are taking off again)
to fly in and make it. And -- who knows? -- maybe someone will die and
there will be an opening to get into the main retreat.
          - Speaking of the main retreat:
              - It's possible there will be yet another presenter at the
compression session (I have no idea how we'll fit him in).
              - Consultant John Hurst will be presenting an "Introduction
to Packaging for Digital Cinema" on Thursday afternoon.
              - There are also two new breakfast roundtables on Friday
morning:
                   - System therapist (and HD production engineer
extraordinaire) C. R. Caillouet will moderate "Film-Style Shooting with
Varicam," and Fujinon's Chuck Lee will moderate "HD Lens Design/Production
Requirements."
     This latest additions might not appear on the printed schedule, but
they're on the website schedule (along with all the latest on the demos --
which have now expanded into a second room):
<http://www.hpaonline.com/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=304>
     Even at this late date, it is possible to add roundtables. If you're
registered, and you want one, find me.

     - Voom - Pending regulatory approval, the only U.S. HD-centric
satellite service, was sold to EchoStar. The sale seems to have been for
EchoStar to get Voom's facilities and frequencies:

     - Skinny picture tubes - There was a good piece in The New York Times
on the 125-degree deflection systems. It quotes Dave Arland of RCA as
saying, "In today's environment, a CRT television is the best all-around
product":

     - Consumer surveys -
          - Several are shown in this story:
<http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?1003226>
          - According to Kagan Research, 3.7 million could get HD (by any
means) as of the end of 2004:

          - Yet another Panasonic-sponsored survey, conducted by Penn
Schoen & Berland, found that 46 percent of women would throw a Super Bowl
or sports-related party if they had a plasma TV:

          - Tom Barry's fourth-annual poll on the AV Science Forum of how
people get their (which had only 233 respondents this year vs. 405 last
year, albeit with a shorter response window) showed the following breakdown:
               Primary HD source      2005     2004
               - DirecTV set-top box   40%      44%

     - DirecTV's plan to offer local HD - EchoStar says the idea of using
Ka-band satellites for the purpose is a bad one due to rain-fade. The

     - Content protection - Broadcast Engineering's Beyond the Headlines
reports that the Marlin Joint Development Association includes Intertrust,
Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, and Sony. Although all devices meeting the
standard can interpret the rules, "Marlin JDA alone does not guarantee
across-the-board interoperability":

     - Companies leaving the plasma business - The latest reported is
plasma pioneer Fujitsu:

          - Warren Communications News reported Friday that Funai has
licensed Thomson's DTT patents. The story is no longer on the site:

     - May 1 -
          - Neither the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) nor the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) updated their lists this week.
          - According to Doug Lung's RF Report in TV Technology, there were
654 licensed U.S. DTT stations in the FCC's CDBS database as of January 16"
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=723>

- FCC head Michael Powell announced his resignation Friday:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-256206A1.pdf>
     He will be leaving in March, but the commission could vote on
mandatory cable carriage of DTT multicasts (which Powell opposes) as early
as February 10, before he leaves:
<http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=7140>
     Powell has been claiming credit for strange things:
     - "If [consumers] take the battery out of their cell phone and look on
the back, and there's an FCC stamp," he says, "they'll know that's me, too."
<http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/usatoday/20050124/bs_usatoday/visi
onaryfordigitalshiftorambitiousderegulator>
     - On the FCC web site, he is given credit for increasing the number of
U.S. DTT stations from 75 in 2001 to 1445 now:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-256206A2.pdf>
     That suggests the 1997 FCC schedule requiring all commercial stations
to transmit DTT by May 1, 2002 and even non-commercial stations by May 1,
2003 had nothing to do with the increase. The site also lists digital sets
sold during his tenure, based on the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
figures, most of which reflect TVs with no digital-reception capability,
and, therefore, having nothing to do with any FCC rules, regulations, or
policies.
     The Reed Business publications Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel
News both reported today that FCC Media Bureau chief Kenneth Ferree will
also be leaving in March. He reportedly supports the mandatory multicast
carriage. The full story requires a paid subscription:

- The NAB will be running a "model" "DTV" station during its convention in
Las Vegas April 16-19:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/hd_tech/20050119/#model>
     I've seen some of the plans. It's not clear to me whether it will
have any DTT transmissions.

- International H/DTV news:

     - The European Information & Communications Technology Industry
Association has announced a standard for HD Ready labeling of TVs, plasma
screens and other HD displays:
          - Minimum native display resolution is 720 lines in wide mode.
          - Analog Y/Pb/Pr AND DVI or HDMI HD inputs are required.
          - Those inputs must accept 1280 x 720 at 50p and 60p and 1920 x
1080 at 50i and 60i.
          - The DVI or HDMI input must support HDCP content protection.
<http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18570.html>

     - The largest single component of the six or seven billion pounds that
the DTT switchover in the UK is expected to cost over the next 20 years,
according to Enders Analysis, is 3.5 billion pounds in increased electric
bills due to set-top boxes:
<http://uk.news.yahoo.com/050121/175/faso7.html>

     - For three euros, Italians can buy a card from retailers all over the
country allowing them to watch a DTT football match:
<http://news.ft.com/cms/s/f8ab0086-68f5-11d9-9183-00000e2511c8.html>

     - The listing of Australia widescreen TVs updated January 17 shows 135
models from 15 brands, starting at A$699 (US$538). Of those, 69 from 11
brands are HDTV (though not necessarily matching the new European
definition), starting at A$1599 (US$1230). There are 11 models with
integrated DTT reception circuitry from four brands, starting at A$2248
(US$1730). There is exactly one DTT HD model; it costs A$8999 (US$6924):
<http://www.widescreentv.info/products.html>
     There are 59 DTT set-top boxes from 25 brands, starting at A$149
(US$115). Of those, 13 from 11 brands are HD, starting at A$499 (US$384):
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=18>

- The New York Times "Circuits" section on Thursday had an article on the
techno-political issues associated with Blu-ray, HD DVD, and DivX:
<http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/20/technology/circuits/20blue.html>

- CEA has not yet sent me any factory sales figures for any period since
the 48th week of 2004.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I am aware of only a DirecTV model at
Best Buy and an LG at Value Electronics.

- Ad confusions - Again, J&R referred to the HP PE4240N plasma TV as an
"EDTV monitor" but also "HD-ready." There seems to be some confusion at
Ken Crane's about which LG models are integrated. When I checked on one of
the model numbers, I found a web site (Teletime) that said a model was a
"monitor" even though it had both ATSC and NTSC "tuners." Sears noted that
the Sony KE42M1 has the "all-in-one convenience of a built-in tuner;" the
tuner happens to be NTSC.

- The ads - Fry's has a $300 premium for digital cable readiness in the
Mitsubishi WD-52525 over the WD-52327.
  - Best Buy (HD disclaimers only):
