- Follow-ups:

     - Indentation - I'm trying something new this week. There might be
some extra line spaces. Please let me know if that's a problem.

     - The ads - In going through old newspapers, I found a Dell ad and
a Harvey ad (both in The New York Times) that I didn't include last
week. Here they are:
  - Dell (no disclaimer):
    - Panasonic 42-inch plasma TV $3780
    - Planar PDP-42BK 42-inch plasma TV $2619
    - Sony PFM-42V1 42-inch plasma TV $2810
  - Harvey (no disclaimer):
    - Loewe ACO9303 30-inch 16:9 direct-view CRT TV $1199
    - Loewe Spheros 42-inch 16:9 plasma TV w/stand $4499
    - SharpVision LC32GD6U 32-inch integr. widescr. LCD DTV $4499
    - SharpVision LC37GD6U 37-inch integr. widescr. LCD DTV $5999

     - Association of Public Television Stations - Sorry about the
cryptic sentence fragment with all the asterisks last week. APTS is no
longer listing non-commercial DTT stations for the public:
<http://www.apts.org/>

     - Australia set-top box prices - I neglected to translate
Australian dollars to U.S. dollars last week. The least-expensive SD
model was A$169, about $117. The least-expensive HD model was A$599,
about $414:
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=18>
In Digital Broadcasting Australia's list of widescreen TVs, updated
September 3, there are 131 models listed. Of those, 11 have integrated
DTT reception, only one of those HD; 14 have "optional" tuners; three
have no tuner at all (not even analog).
The integrated HDTV is A$8999 ($6218). The least-expensive
integrated SDTV is A$2248 ($1553). The least expensive widescreen TV is
A$699 ($483), including analog reception circuitry. The least expensive
HDTV is A$1599 ($1077). It may be worth noting that ten models (two LCD
and eight plasma) have just 480-line vertical resolution -- less than
ordinary analog PAL TV:

- Toshiba has signed a license agreement for Zenith's DTT-reception
intellectual property. According to a contact of mine in the
consumer-electronics realm, this is a very significant announcement,
following quite a bit of haggling over whose rights are worth how much:
<http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/08-30-2004/0002240790&EDATE=>

- Based on figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA),
sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets for the first 32
weeks of 2004 were down 4% from the same period in 2003. My ten-week
running average was down 12.5%. For the first 33 weeks, they were down
4.5% and my ten-week running average was down 12.8%.
Sales of so-called "Digital Television" sets for the 32nd week were
said to be 83,416 units. For the first 32 weeks, they were said to be
2,406,429 units. For the 33rd week it was 85,724 units and for the
first 33 weeks 2,258,287. Obviously, that doesn't make sense. There
was an "R" next to the "Digital Television" figures reported for the
33rd week, indicating that revisions were made to previous figures.
"Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for 15.5% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 32nd week
this year (based on the old figures) and 14.3% through the 33rd week
(based on the new figures). It may be worth noting here what that
means. More than 85% of the non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold
through the 33rd week this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view
TVs with picture tubes.
To qualify as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable
of receiving DTT signals were still a small fraction of those numbers.

- DVD news:

     - According to CEA, sales of DVD players to U.S. dealers for the
first 32 weeks of 2004 were down 2.4% from the same period in 2003. My
ten-week running average was down 4.7%. VCR sales were down 63.3%. For
the first 33 weeks they were down 2.5%, my ten-week running average was
down 6.2%, and VCRs were down 63.5%. There was an "R" in the 33rd-week
figures, indicating that figures in this category may have been revised.

     - A few sources noted this week that Sanyo adopted the HD DVD
format, but some withdrew the story later. Here's one that didn't (if

- Disney is postponing the expansion of its analog-broadcast-delivered
MovieBeam datacast-delivery service into additional markets. It has
been operating (via PBS stations) in three markets (Jacksonville, Salt
