So, you're in favor of the opposite? Less unique programming, all confined to a single virtual channel? Do you think the networks should confine their public interest programming to a single virtual channel, and only carry presidential addresses when the (perceived ahead of time) "news value" is more important than (to put it mildly) "displeasing regular viewers?" Or are you just wailing? John Willkie P.S. My vote is for wailing. -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Craig Birkmaier Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2004 9:22 AM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: 20040608 Twang's Tuesday Tribune (Mark's Monday Memo) At 10:28 AM -0400 6/9/04, Manfredi, Albert E wrote: >So that makes CBS and ABC interested in multicasting, with ABC already >testing two SD + one 60p HD stream in a multicast. I found one aspect of the CBS announcement interesting. It could be that multi-casting may be the way to make the politicians feel like the networks are meeting their public service responsibilities even as they move the core networks to a pure entertainment play. CBS suggested that with a multicast, they could continue to run the regular network fare, while delivering a President's speech on another sub channel. What a deal! With multi-casting we can deliver stuff that hardly anyone will watch, get full credit from the politicians, and keep making money off the core network...
