- Follow-ups:

     - The ads - I forgot to include J&R last time, so this time there
are THREE weeks worth of J&R ads.

     - BBC and HDTV - A reader wrote: "Readers should definitely not
take from it the view that HD is being actively considered for broadcast
by the BBC at present, HD's a production medium that helps international
sales, no more than that."
     He refers readers to Part 5 of the BBC report at this URL,
paragraphs 104-109:
<http://www.culture.gov.uk/global/publications/archive_2004/bbc_report_on_digital_switchover.htm>
     To me, it seems to say what I reported last week.

     - NAB show DTT reception - I am told that datacasts were received
on the show floor. I still saw no DTT video being received there
(though I DID see reception elsewhere in Las Vegas).

     - USDTV and other multicast-package plans - Here's an article from
today's New York Times:
<http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/03/business/media/03band.html>

     - Cable and HDTV -
          - Comcast reported adding 176,000 HD subscribers in the first
quarter to a total of 469,000:
<http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/04-28-2004/0002161505&EDATE=>
          - Technology officials from major cable companies agreed at
the National Show in New Orleans that cable plans to go all-digital
within three to five years:
<http://www.tvweek.com/news/web050304.html#all>
          - Other news from the National Show:
               - Scientific-Atlanta showed the Explorer 8300 HD
multi-room PVR box:
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA414732?display=Breaking+News>
               - Diego (Moxi) also showed a multi-room system (very low
cost):
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA414731?display=Breaking+News>
               - And Motorola also had a multi-room scheme:
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA414555?display=Breaking+News>
               - Motorola's HD DCT6412 has a two-tuner PVR and says it
had shipped over a million HD cable boxes by April 1:

     - May 1 -
          - The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) did not
update its list this week.
          - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) did, as of April 28:
               - 1643 stations (97% of the original group) have been
granted either construction permits or licenses and 1411 are on the air:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvsum.html>
               - There has been no change in the 40 ABC, CBS, Fox, and
NBC stations in the top-ten markets due on the air May 1, 1999:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvstat.html>
               - The 79 stations in markets 11-30 due on the air
November 1, 1999 are finally all on the air, 7 of them on temporary
authority:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvstat11.html>
               - The FCC's chart shows 259 non-commercial U.S. DTT stations:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvonairsum.html>
     But the Association of Public Television Stations still lists only 246:
<http://www.apts.org/html/digital/dtv/ptv_digitalstations.htm>
               - These are the 771 stations operating at low power on
temporary authority:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvstas.html>
               - These are the 640 stations said to be either fully
licensed or operating on program-test authority:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvonair.html>
     But Doug Lung's RF Report in TV Technology notes only 513 fully
licensed DTT stations listed in the FCC's CDBS database as of April 25,
no increase from his previous report:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=425>

- I don't have a "December 31" section, but there continues to be much
discussion about shutting down analog transmission when the
congressionally mandated 85%+ point is reached. I, therefore, found a
non-TV-related item on the FCC web site this week interesting. It's
about telephone service. It notes that 94.7% of U.S. households have
it. The report is concerned with delivering it to the remaining 5%:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-04-87A1.doc>
     So, is 85+% going to be enough?

- International H/DTV news:

     - Digital Broadcasting Australia says DTT receiver sales there
(normally to dealers and installers) hit 322,000 by March:
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?display=news&newsID=532>

- The Consumer Electronics Association's Spring HDTV Guide is now
available online:
<http://www.ce.org/publications/books_references/dtv_guide/default.asp>
     Strangely, only a portion of the product guide is available online,
and only the other portion is in the print version of the guide I picked
up at the NAB convention. Here's what's in the online version:
     - DTV/DVD Combo Monitors - seven, ranging in price from $499 to $2799
     - DTV Video Recorders - six, $449-$1295
     - Flat Panel EDTV Monitors - 112 (26 with no NTSC tuner), $449-$19,500
     - Digital TV PC Tuner Cards - seven, $199-$399
     - Set-Top HDTV PVRs - 14, $449-$1299
     - HDTV Cable Boxes - 16, $299-$999 (for those with prices; others
said "Check with your local cable operator)
     It also had "Cable Systems with HDTV Programming" and "HDTV
Programming." All of this was as of February 23:
<http://www.ce.org/publications/books_references/dtv_guide/listings/HDTV_Products_Chart_winter04.pdf>
     The print version had the following:
     - Flat Panel HDTV Monitors - 246 (74 with no NTSC tuner), $369-$36,995
     - Integrated Digital TV Sets - 115, $799.99-$20,999
     - HDTV Monitors - 354 (120 with no NTSC tuner) $599.99-$249,995
     - Digital TV Set-Top Decoders - 25, $399 (a DISH model) to $1699
     There has been a debate about whether any manufacturers would
remove their analog tuners rather than comply with the FCC mandate to
include DTT-reception circuitry with products that have analog tuners.
With 220 tunerless models already listed (and none of the tuner-equipped
models in their categories equipped with DTT-reception circuitry), there
no longer seems to be a reason for debate.

- The AVS Forum has a regularly updated HDTV Programming Synopsis:
<http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=6ee14cc8e15b8dc9ff2526fdebde69d5&threadid=164671>

- For the tenth week in a row, the Consumer Electronics Association
(CEA) has reported no factory-to-U.S.-dealer sales of (supposedly)
non-H/DTV projection TVs; I hereby declare the category dead and will no
longer report it. If it comes back to life, I'll put it back.
     VCRs were down 68.3% for the first 15 weeks of 2004 compared to the
same period in 2003. Direct-view was UP 4.8%. My ten-week running
average was essentially flat.
     So-called "Digital Television" sales to U.S. dealers for the 15th
week were 71,141 units. For the first 15 weeks of the year, there were
1,092,579 units. "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays
without DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 14.4% of the TVs
(not counting plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers so far
this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. Over 85% of
the TVs sold so far this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs
with picture tubes.
     To qualify as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable
of receiving DTT signals were still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I saw only the Samsung at J&R.
Circuit City offered a DirecTV system "upgrade" to a Samsung SIRTS160
for $299.99.

- The ads - Harvey's ad supplement listed both integrated sets and
monitors as "HD-Ready." I'm not sure of the prices of the plasma TVs at
Ultimate. They had a $300 coupon, and it's not clear to me which prices
included the coupon savings.

- DVD news:

     - According to CEA, sales of DVD players to U.S. dealers for the
first 15 weeks of 2004 were up 8.8% over the same period in 2003 --
single digit growth! My ten-week running average was up 11.6%.

there are 90 FCC-licensed communications satellites and another 25+
