At what event this year will you find the Chief Technology Officer of CableLabs, the Oversight Executive for Motion Intelligence of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, and the Engineer-in-Charge of the Metropolitan Opera? The same event will also have the European Broadcasting Union's Head of Emerging Media, the head of the Visual Space Perception Laboratory at the University of California -- Berkeley, the mysterious Mo Henry (whose name appears in the credits of hundreds of features), and key executives of major television networks and movie studios.

It's the 16th-annual Tech Retreat of the Hollywood Post Alliance, taking place February 16-19 at Rancho Las Palmas Conference Center in Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs area), California. The still-expanding program may be found here:

It will start with the 2010 audio summit of the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) and a seminar of high-dynamic-range imaging by SMPTE Gold Medal winner Charles Poynton. Next will be a 3D-in-the-home supersession addressing everything from the physiology of stereoscopic perception at home-viewing distances to standardization to end-to-end business plans.

Then comes the current environment for motion imagery, from broadcasting, cable, satellite, and IPTV to mobile, physical media (from brick-&-mortar retailers or automated kiosks), gaming, ultra-wide screens, and even immersive media -- and how to synchronize them all via fingerprint technology. Hear the results of Ernst & Young's survey of the "Direction of the Digital World," then view technology demonstrations by dozens of companies, from Advanced Micro Devices to the Fraunhofer Institute (where MP3 came from), from old-timers like Panasonic to new ventures like Oculus 3D. And that's just the end of the first full day!

The HPA Tech Retreat has been called the one event that can't be missed. Find out why.

I hope to see you there.

TTFN,
Mark
