At its meeting last night, Old Union's session was able to celebrate two
joys while facing one challenge.
Joy #1: An anonymous donor will pay the entire cost to have the church
parking lot paved, an expense of about $70,000. The upper lot will not be
paved, but a paved lane will lead to the Cashdollar Road exit of the
parking lot. The work should take place in September
Joy #2: Because of some unexpectedly generous donations and grants, the
church's August mission trip is now fully funded, even though this year's
trip will be significantly more expensive than previous years. The total
trip budget is more than $8,500.
The Challenge: The session accepted a bid of more than $34,000 to replace
the roof on the original building. The flat roof over the annex is leaking
and causing damage to underlying material. The shingled roof over the
sanctuary is not leaking yet, but the shingles are brittle and could fail
soon. It is less expensive to replace them both at the same time. The
church has already received $7,000 in donations for this project and we
have about $7000 available in our major repair fund. This leaves about
$20,000 for the church to raise. The work will be done in mid to late
August.
