Got the new computer up and running. One of the problems with my old one was it
intermittently stopped seeing USB ports, so mouse, keyboard, backup drives
would disappear. Plugged in the old stuff to the new machine & it all works
great...except the backup drive. It appears you can have two problems at the
same time. I didn't catch it because all the other stuff didn't show up, either
The drive is making faint clicking noises when plugged in but not seen by
anything I plug it into. I think it's dead, Jim.
Thankfully, it is the BACKUP drive, so while somethings are forever lost, most
of the really important stuff exists in other places. But I need a new backup
drive. What is everyone doing these days for backups? One huge drive? Several
smaller ones? If drives, which ones appear to be most stable? Does SSD make any
sense for backups? This WD drive lasted probably 10 years, so not backing IT up
was my own damn fault. Cloud backups? All my data floating in space worries me.
Pricing retrieval (rough quote: $900 for 512 GB, so maybe $700 for this 320GB
drive) makes me very leery of massive drives.
