Hello OCCCIR,
I wrote Rogue's SENSE liaison regarding the binary gender question that we
discussed at our last meeting (please see my email below for a recap). I
received the following response this week (somehow my email got missed in the
shuffle) that I thought you all would like to see.
I'm copying Amy and Ben at the state, so they know how this question has/will
be updated.
Thanks,
Courtney

Hi Courtney,
Thank you for your question. Both SENSE and CCSSE framed the question in this
way to match the categories reported to IPEDS. That being said, refreshing
SENSE is definitely in our agenda (has been delayed by our pivoting to an
online survey due to COVID). When we refreshed CCSSE in 2017, we changed the
item as follows:

For our most recent survey, the Race/Ethnicity Pilot, the question looks like
this:

I am not sure what the question will look like once SENSE is refreshed, but it
definitely will change. We certainly understand the concern students might have
with the current item being so limited, but unfortunately, we cannot change for
2021.
Thanks again,
Emilio

Subject: SENSE 2021 Question
Hi Emilio,
We had a meeting with other IR shops across Oregon today and one college
mentioned that they didn't think they would be participating in the SENSE
survey this year because students have been pushing back against the use of
binary gender/sex questions. We were wondering if there is any thought of
updating question 29 to be more inclusive of non-binary folks. I'm not sure if
you're the person to ask or if there's someone else that you could refer me to.
