IMMEDIATE RELEASE, FRIDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2018
Streeting – “There is no reason to leave the Customs Union”
Trade Secretary Liam Fox has ruled out Britain remaining in the Customs Union.
Using an interview with Bloomberg TV in which he boasted of the success of this
week’s trade delegation visit to China, Mr Fox said any form of customs union
or common external tariff with the EU was unacceptable.
Commenting, Wes Streeting MP, leading supporter of the Open Britain campaign,
said:
“Liam Fox rules out British membership of the Customs Union while the
Government simultaneously boasts of how we are boosting exports to China while
inside it.
“It beggars belief he cannot see the contradiction here. His policy of ‘it’s
not broken, so let’s smash it’ is as nonsensical as it is dangerous.
“Our membership of the Customs Union works. As this week’s trip to China shows,
it is fully compatible with growing our exports to developing markets while
maintaining frictionless trade with our largest trading partner on our doorstep.
“There is no reason to leave the Customs Union apart from an the Brextremists
ideological commitment to the hardest possible Brexit.
“That's why MPs from across the party political divide will be supporting Anna
Soubry's cross-party amendments to keep Britain in the Customs Union in the
national interest.”
