A lone SNOW GOOSE has been sighted at various places at the north end of the
bottom several times since 4/13 and a EURASIAN WIGEON was seen as recently as
yesterday. BLUE-WINGED TEAL were also reported on the sightings board
yesterday for the first time this season. CINAMMON TEAL are easy to find and
there are still GREEN-WINGED TEAL about. VAUX's SWIFT have been seen several
times in the last week including a flock of ~ 50 birds last Friday. 1-2000
CACKLING GEESE are still in the area. Dennis Manzer observed chick feeding
behavior twice, for 2-3 minutes each time, at the BALD EAGLE nest today, for
the first time this season. The nest can be observed from the north viewing
platform and from the main trail as you head south from the viewing platform.
7 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were hanging out in the trees at the T
junction of the main north - south trail this morning. Today's morning bird
song walk had four attendees and ended just as the rain started. Singing
AMERICAN and LESSER GOLDFINCHES were new (since April 1), ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (Myrtles observed) plus the usual resident
suspects were singing.
This Saturday from 11am-2pm we are hosting a class focusing on the "Charismatic
Avifauna of Jackson Bottom", the nesting eagles, osprey and herons. Some
indoor discussion of their different life-styles and then a walk to view them.
