In answer to questions:

1) the boiling I was referring to is in the cleaning process. That is where
you will boil water, dip the feeder in the water for about 5 minutes, then
wash as usual.
2) RE: feeding solutions - boiling water kills anything in the water, like
mold spores, (you can gas off chlorine if you boil water for 15 minutes).
So some recommend boiling the water before putting the sugar in. Gauge how
much you bleach or boil on how often you get fungi in the feeder. Hot, wet
climate = more; dry, hot climate = more; cool, dry climate = less.
3) If you boil the water, boil more than you need (say 4.25 quarts). Then
once it has boiled a minute, measure it out into another container and add
your sugar (4 cups water to 1 cup sugar). DO NOT boil the sugar, you risk
crystallizing the sugar and you will have candy instead of hummer solution.
4) Then cool the solution
5) ONLY then add it to your feeders - which are often made of or have
plastic parts, and who knows how much BPA in them.
6) On poop - two thoughts on this. a) giving hummers a perch reduces their
energy use and gives them a rest, b) no perch means cleaner feeders. Both
are true.
You can do both by using a flat-basin type of feeder that has its perch as
an outer ring.
Reality is hummers are pretty clean in terms of bugs and infections. So
don't worry too much, and enjoy the birds. But its really important to keep
those molds and fungi out of their feeders. So clean frequently.
