Friends,

I had lunch with Dave today.

He and his wife, friends and family are in the midst of the worst roller
coaster imaginable.

Jody is one of those "Don't drink, don't smoke, what do you do"
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Tj-Xo_eqI) people.  She's never smoked,
never drank, eats well, walks the dog twice a day, hikes, cycles, etc., and is
not an ounce overweight.

It took a lot of pushing from Dave, but she reluctantly went to see a doctor
after about a few days of fatigue in July, 2018.  She was cleared with clear
blood tests.  Ever the hands on doctor, Dr. Dave pushed and an ultrasound
revealed a large mass on one of her kidneys.

In record time, that kidney was removed.

But a CT revealed that the cancer had metastasized into the lower spine (L4).

Another CT today will determine if it's also gotten into the lungs.

Jody is fighting lower back pain, bad enough to compromise her mobility, and
fatigue.

She is undergoing radiation for the pain - unfortunately the radiation doesn't
do anything to actually fight this kind of cancer.  She will start some type of
immunity boosting therapy soon, to help the body's systems attack the L4 cancer.

The studies are apparently shit, as far a survivability for cancer that has
metastasized into bone.  But those studies are apparently based on the type of
people who are more likely to get cancer - drinkers/smokers/etc.  And Jody has
a brilliantly positive attitude so there's hope!

I'm not a prayer, but I'll pray for Jody that today's CT shows clear lungs, and
that her incredibly healthy body will beat this son of a bitch.

I asked Dave if I could update the OBE.  He somewhat reluctantly said that I
could, i.e. he's not looking for sympathy.  I doubt he expected I'd set out the
full details but I suspect he's piss tired explaining it over and over and over
again.
