Approaching Hughlett Point NAP near Kilmarnock, lower Northumberland County, in the next to the last field on the right before reaching the preserve parking lot I counted 158 yellowlegs this afternoon, approximately 75% greater, 25% lesser. This is a county high count for these species for me. 17 semi-palmated sandpipers and a single killdeer were mixed in. The walk around Hughlett Point was fairly quiet but we saw two seaside sparrows, the first of these at this location in a few years. After leaving Hughlett we made the short drive to Dameron Marsh and came upon twelve glossy ibis working a puddle in a field bordering Guarding Point Lane. While scanning these striking birds to make sure there were no white-faced ibis among them (not that I could see) a local resident drove up to tell me that the ibis had been in the field across from his house (same field where the yellowlegs are today) for at least two weeks. We get glossies every three or four years but rarely for more than a day or two. If this week's weather forecast holds true we may be in for a good year for spring shorebirds. Tom Saunders Kilmarnock
