A service of the Northern Neck Audubon Society--- This morning around 9:00am, as I was puzzling over the cross-word challenge, a larger than usual bird appeared in my peripheral vision. When I spotted it under the feeder, it immediately took off. I was so startled and hrilled - then horrified - that I failed to get field marks to ID. Many of us have experienced concern when we garden for or feed birds because it concentrates them unnaturally and predators can take advantage of that. I checked my Peterson's guessing that this was an Accipiter or bird hawk. OK, here I go again, with several spcies my visitor may have been, but most likely either a Sharp-shinned hawk aka "Sharpy" or Cooper's hawk. In my book they look alot alike. So there you have it, not sure. Happy birding!
