Our feeders, in particular the tubular ones with black oil sunflower seed, served an "al fresco" supper to a gorgeous male rose-breasted grosbeak for about 15 minutes, or so, beginning at 6:15pm Thursday evening 28 April '11. The guest was bedecked in all of his multicolored mate seeking finery and put all the other dining notables to shame that evening. It is a real bummer that he was just passing through though. He really lit up the back yard for the little time he was here. However, neither my sweetie nor I ever did see any sign of a female. We had seen only one other grosbeak visit in recent years here in the far northern limits of Kilmarnock and that was some three years ago when a pair of them showed up for about a day's rest, presumably on their way north.
