Windmill Point Bird Walk Saturday, November 26
On Thanksgiving Saturday, November 26, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS)
will conduct a bird walk at Windmill Point led by Jeff Wright. Windmill Point,
the eastern most part of Lancaster County, juts out into the Chesapeake Bay at
the mouth of the Rappahannock River. Windmill Point is listed as a birding
hotspot on e-Bird which makes it a good location to see a variety of bird
species. This area of the Northern Neck is a wintering area for migrating
waterfowl and possible sightings include early arriving swans, geese and ducks
along with bald eagles, raptors and a variety of seabirds.
The walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Windmill Point Beach. From the stoplight
in Whitestone, drive east approximately 8 miles to the end of Windmill Point
Road (Route 695) where the group will meet. The group will walk along the
shoreline of the beach and the parking areas of Windmill Point Marina along the
water.
Many of the 203 species of birds observed in Lancaster County and listed on
e-Bird were recorded in the Windmill Point vicinity. Data collected and
submitted through the e-Bird system helps the Virginia Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries, other state agencies and conservation groups map the
distribution and status of Virginia's bird population in order to better inform
our natural resource and conservation decisions.

events.

walk in case it is cancelled.
