Subject: Middle peninsula bird club
COVID-19 Plan:
This past Thursday was our second bird walk under the specter of COVID-19 and
with 6 people we tried to be very mindful of maintaining the recommended
“social distance”. Of course we will continue that practice in future bird
walks. If the walks are attended by more than 10 people we will split up the
group and send groups off in different directions. Please DO NOT attend if you
are not feeling well or your immune system is compromised. Being outdoors
watching birds is good for the body and soul, but we will cancel the walks if
the situation worsens. The parks remain open so you can always go on your own.
Go to Jason Ward’s YouTube videos for some great bird watching; informative and
entertaining:

Va DGIF Peregrine Falcon Cam in Richmond:
https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/falcon-cam/?utm_source=mailchimp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=falcon_cam
There is a pair of Peregrine Falcons visiting the nest often. Will there be any
eggs this year??? you can sign-up for email updates to avoid watching 24/7.
Tuesday April 7
The Middle Peninsula Bird Club will guide participants in a bird walk on
Tuesday April 7 at 8:00 am at Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, 7900 Daffodil Lane, Ware
Neck area. Bring your binoculars and enjoy watching and listening to the
variety of birds found on the property. Spring breeding season has begun with
increased bird song so now is a good time to hone your bird song listening
skills. Brent and Becky’s Bulbs is listed as a birding “hotspot” on eBird
(Cornell University’s website of citizen birding observations).

Thursday April 23
The Middle Peninsula Bird Club will birdwatch on private property on Thursday
April 23 at 8:00 am. The address is 7134 Ware House Rd. (Rt. 621) Gloucester
Court House. Fox Mill Run forms one of the boundaries of the property. Turn
right off of Rt. 621 onto a dirt driveway past VDOT and the Forestry Department
buildings. You will not see the house from the road. Plenty of parking. Spring
migration species should be seen on this walk. Last spring we saw several
woodpecker species including Red-headed Woodpeckers, and a Hermit Thrush.
Any cancellations due to weather or COVID-19 will be posted on the Club’s
Facebook page.
You do not have to be an expert to join the walks; we are an informal group
with no membership fees. We welcome all levels of birders. More information can
be found on the Club’s Facebook page.
Saturday May 9 is Global Big Day
On 9 May, will you join birders from more than 175 countries and be a part of
Global Big Day? You don’t have to commit to birding for 24 hours—an hour or
even 10 minutes of watching birds makes you part of the team.
Join the Middle Peninsula Bird Club for a full day of birding exploring the
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) Virginia Bird and
Wildlife Trail (VBWT) Gloucester Loop.
https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/vbwt/coastal-trail/CGL/
If you don’t have time to devote a full day to birding, please feel free to
join us for part of the Loop. There are Loops in Mathews and King and
Queen/King William Counties that we will plan for future Saturday dates.
We will meet at 7:45 am at the Gloucester Library parking lot on Main Street to
consolidate cars for carpooling to the sites. The first site will be Ware House
Landing Boat Ramp and we will follow the DGIF directions to the sites.
Any cancellations due to weather or COVID-19 will be posted on the Club’s
Facebook page.
