You are invited to attend the Middle Peninsula Bird Club meeting to hear Wes
Jones tell about his “winged” adventure of a different kind.Thursday January
9th 2014 7 PM at Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, 7900 Daffodil LaneLifelong local
sailor Wes Jones will present a narrated slide show of his 2012 back-to-back
east and west transatlantics. Wes, who owned his first sailboat at the age of
10, sailed his Fast 40 “Valiant”, a 5500 lb. sloop that has a beam of 8 feet
and is dry-sailed from a trailer. The passages, which were completed with 68
days at sea and a total calendar time Deltaville to Deltaville of 86 days,
included a direct Deltaville to Kinsale, Ireland passage on the “northern
route” of 24 days, a dismasting, and a return Azores to Deltaville without a
working engine. Birds featured will be the Bermuda longtail and an as-yet
unidentified mid-ocean visitor that the attendees may perhaps identify.
