It had been eight days since we'd checked on the least terns at Hughlett, so we braved the heat after dinner to see how they were getting on. Little had changed since last week: about 25 adults occupy the middle section of beach and at least two nests seem to be active. The horned grebe that was first seen nearly two weeks ago was easily seen within just 50 feet or so of the north shoreline. It is unusually tame. Other birds seen were several brown pelicans, many double-crested cormorants, a few great blue herons, brown-headed nuthatches, indigo buntings, cardinals, Carolina wrens, ospreys and at least one Acadian flycatcher.
