FINALLY! A pair of hooded mergansers! On my walk yesterday afternoon, I saw a bald eagle, a belted kingfisher, a bluebird, about 50 Canada geese, 22 mallards, 40 buffleheads, the hooded mergansers and a common loon. The waterfowl were all on Robinson's Creek just upriver of Urbanna Creek. I've never seen the Canada geese and the mallards in flocks like that on Robinson's Creek or out in the Rappahannock in my 8 years here....but I usually have a flock of 12 hooded mergansers in my small cove (Heath's) and they have not been here at all this year (lots of buffleheads, though). After the bird walk with the Middle Peninsula Bird Club on Jan 12, I went with Patty Munford to her home on the upper branch of Lagrange Creek (the next creek upriver from Robinson's) and there were 54 (!) hooded mergansers in front of her house! 29 males and 24 females. There are usually 100 or so tundra swans on her creek, but they have not been there this year....only about 6.About a month ago, I did see 6 red breasted mergansers in a small cove near me....and I usually don't see them here...but I only saw them that one time.Maggie Gerdts
