I'm re-sending the announcement of the bird walks with Ellison Orcutt, the
region 5 director of the Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas. If anyone is involved in
this project, please consider joining Ellison for one of the walks coming up.
June 3rd (this coming Saturday) is next up, at the Hutchinson tract of the
Rappahannock River Valley NWR. Melissa Gross

Hi folks,
Tomorrow's Atlas field trips will go rain or shine.
Look forward to seeing you.

FIELD DAYS (Details Attached)
I have planned three field days this spring. They will be opportunities to
meet each other (and me!) and share/learn skills and techniques related to the
Atlas. And really, who doesn't like a bird walk?! I spread them across the
region and spring season with the hope that many of you will be able to attend.
Please share this with others whom are interested in the atlas. We still need
to recruit more atlasers in the region. I have attached the details of the
three field day dates but below are the basics.
May 28th, Sunday ( 2 parts)
* Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve (Lancaster) - 8am
* Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve (Mathews) - 230pm
June 3rd, Saturday
* Rappahannock River Valley NWR - Hutchinson Tract (Essex)- 730am
June 17th , Saturday
* Ni River Trail - (Spotsylvania) - 730am
Thanks for everyone's hard work. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Look forward to meeting some of you!
Ellison

Hello Atlasers,
Before spring gets going any faster I wanted to send out a spring primer for
those of us atlasing in Region 5. As I'm sure you've noted an extremely mild
February has led to spring being a little ahead of schedule. We are starting to
see that trend apply to breeding birds and I suspect that will be true the rest
of the season. The Atlas is beginning its 2nd season (1st full season) and I
want to assist and support you guys as much as possible. Rather than overwhelm
everyone and send every helpful link or suggestion I can think of in the body
of this email I'll keep this one simple. If this is your first season there
will be a learning curve but once you "get it" you'll really get it. If this
is your second season the first steps this year will be evaluating where your
blocks from last year stand and identifying what effort (if any) is needed to
get them finished up.
Over the course of this spring I will be available by phone and email and hope
to schedule at least two "field workshops" in early June to meet folks and do
some atalsing in the region. Over the next few days and weeks I will continue
to send out emails to help you with the survey season. Stay tuned in to the
home page of the Atlas eBird page where great help articles are posted (and
stored). http://ebird.org/content/atlasva/
Also, there are two facebook pages for the Atlas. A public page and closed
group strictly for atalsers. I'd be happy to help you find those if you are
interested.
I'll finish this email with a note about our current Atlas team in Region 5.
Below is the list of people currently atlasing in our region (the list reflects
registered names, apologies for spouses that are not on this list...they are
also appreciated!!). I wanted you to see who is on our "team". We have a great
group, many of which are intimately familiar with the region. From this group
we have already received one impressive season of data. Still our numbers are
small and there is a lot of ground left to cover. Adding additional atlasers
will be important to effectively covering the area. If you are aware of folks
who may be good fits please share the Atlas with them and certainly put them in
touch with me if they would like more information.
Many thanks and good birding.
