The photo was taken in British Columbia. Photo Contest Winners! Here they are--the cream of the huge crop of photos entered in the 2013 Great Backyard Bird Count photo contest! It seems especially appropriate that the stunning Snowy Owl image taken by Diane McAllister of Nevada should be our overall winner, given the current massive irruption of Snowy Owls into the Great Lakes, the Northeast, and the Atlantic Seaboard states of North America. All of our top winners in the six contest categories are breathtaking, as are the many more earning honorable mention. Nearly 7,000 images were submitted! As always, it's a major undertaking to sort and judge the photos when there are so many that are wonderful. But enough chatter. Take a look at the top five winners in each category and then enjoy more great images from among those receiving honorable mention. We think you'll agree these may be some of the best GBBC images yet. Thanks to GBBC sponsors Wild Birds Unlimited and Droll Yankees for donating the prizes given to our winners. Don't forget to submit your GBBC photos this year! Top 10 Birds Video We have a new video for you! It features the 10 species of birds that appeared on the most checklists during the 2013 Great Backyard Bird Count. You'll also learn some other key facts about these species--including a quick way to tell the difference between a Hairy and a Downy woodpecker, and the scientific term used to describe species in which the male and female look very different. You can also use this video in conjunction with our GBBC instructional video or PowerPoint slide show if you are planning to give a presentation about the count in your community.
